The Senate on Thursday, has passed a bill aimed at prohibiting Nigerian athletes from using performance-enhancing substances during or after sports competitions.

President Bola Tinubu had submitted a request to the Senate to enact this legislation, conveyed through a letter read by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session.

The bill, titled the “National Anti-Doping Bill 2024,” seeks to domesticate and enforce the international convention against doping in sports in preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games in France.

It also aims to establish a Nigerian anti-doping center to fulfill the country’s obligations under the World Anti-Doping Code, in line with international standards.

The bill’s passage came after the Senate committee on judiciary, human rights, and legal matters presented its report, led by committee chairman Senator Mohammed Monguno.

The Senate adopted the committee’s recommendations, and the bill was approved for a third reading following a voice vote overseen by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin
