Senate Committee Probes Electricity Tariff Hike

The Senate Committee on Power has begun an investigative hearing into the electricity tariff hike in Nigeria.

This hearing is being conducted at the National Assembly in Abuja. The Senate has expressed its intention to hold accountable anyone or agency found responsible for contributing to the difficulties faced by Nigerians.

Senator Eyinnaya Ababribe, the chairman of the committee, stated during the hearing on Monday that it was prompted by two motions presented at plenary on July 25, 2023, and February 21, 2024.

He said the Senate by its resolutions mandated the Committee on Power to “engage with the Federal Ministry of Power, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and other stakeholders.”

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and other top officials in the power sector were at the hearing.
