NEWS DIGEST- DC United and their head coach, Wayne Rooney, have officially reached an agreement to go their separate ways, marking the end of Rooney’s time as the team’s manager.

Rooney, a renowned former England and Manchester United forward, initially joined DC United as a player in 2018 and later assumed the role of head coach in July 2022.

Despite securing a 2-0 victory over New York City FC in their final match of the season, DC United finished with 40 points overall. After the game, Rooney expressed his commitment to helping the team make it to the playoffs but acknowledged that it was time to embark on a new chapter.

DC United’s CEO and co-chairman, Jason Levien, confirmed the decision in an official statement, emphasizing the mutual nature of the parting. 

Levien highlighted how this move would enable the club’s next general manager to establish a fresh philosophy and structure for the team, starting with the hiring of a new head coach.

Rooney’s departure signifies the conclusion of his significant contributions to DC United, both as a player and captain, and as the team’s coach. The club expressed gratitude for Rooney’s dedication and contributions to the squad, as well as his impact on soccer in the nation’s capital.
