Roma has announced the termination of Jose Mourinho’s coaching role, stating it was “in the best interests of the club.”

Mourinho, along with his technical team, was fired on Tuesday and will depart immediately, despite his contract originally set to expire in Jun

The club expressed gratitude for Mourinho’s passion and efforts, acknowledging the memorable moments during his tenure. The decision stems from Roma’s current struggles in Serie A, where they currently occupy the ninth position, five points adrift of Champions League spots.

The 60-year-old Portuguese coach, who took over in 2021, previously led Roma to victory in the Europa Conference League in 2022 but faced challenges this season. Italian media speculate that former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi, a 2006 World Cup winner with Italy, could potentially step in as Mourinho’s replacement.

“We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” said owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.

“We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavors.”
