Suspected highway robber shot dead by Police in Ogun

NEWS DIGEST – The Ogun State Police Command says it has shot dead a suspected highway robber at Fidiwo, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the slain robbery suspect was a member of a gang, which blocked that section of the expressway, dispossessing motorists and travellers of their cash and other valuables.

He said based on a distress call received by the police at Isara Divisional Headquarters that hoodlums operating on motorcycles had blocked the expressway, the Divisional Police Officer, Yussuf Taiwo, led his team to the scene.

But on sighting the policemen, Oyeyemi said the hoodlums opened fire on them while the security operatives retaliated.

He said, “At the end of the gun duel, one of the robbers was shot dead while others escaped with various degrees of gunshot injuries.”

He said a cut-to-size locally made pistol and two motorcycles used for the operation were also recovered.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has commended the quick response to the distress call by the men of the Isara Division.

He also directed that escaped members of the gang be hunted and brought to justice.
