The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been directed by the House of Representatives to extend the registration period for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) by a period of two weeks.

At Thursday’s plenary in Abuja, Rep. Hassan Shinkafi (PDP-Zamfara) adopted a motion of urgent public concern, which was followed by the resolution.

“Need to extend UTME registration by JAMB,” reads the title of the motion.

Shinkafi, who made the motion, stated that the UTME registration period ran from January 15, 2024, to February 26, 2024.

He continued, saying that “many families have been constrained from registering their wards by this timeline” due to the dire economic situations facing the nation.

The senator claimed that many applicants would be unable to register and take part in the exercise if JAMB did not grant an extension.

Mr Shinkafi asserts that there might not be greater coverage and participation in Nigeria for the 2024 UTME.

However, he egged the legislators to step in, saying that extending the deadline might persuade parents of students from less advantaged backgrounds to sign up their children for the test.

After passing the proposal, the House ordered the pertinent committees on legislative compliance and education to strictly enforce JAMB’s request to extend registration by two weeks.
