Professor Umaru Shehu, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, has died.

Borno Elders Forum issued a statement on Monday, signed by its Secretary, Dr. Bulama Gubio, announcing the death of Northern Nigeria’s first Professor of Community Health.

Prof. Shehu was the founder of the Kanem Borno Historical and Cultural Foundation and a co-founder of the Borno Elders Forum. He died at the age of 97.

He was a former President of the Nigerian Academy of Science and Emeritus Professor of Community Health at the University of Maiduguri.

Prof. Shehu was born in Maiduguri, Nigeria on December 8, 1930. He attended Maiduguri Elementary School from 1935 to 1940, Maiduguri Middle School from 1941 to 1943, Kaduna College from 1944 to 1947, University College Ibadan from 1948 to 1953, and the University of Liverpool from 1953 to 1956 and 1966 to 1967.

Professor Shehu graduated from the University of London with a Bachelor of Medicine degree. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the British Medical Journal and a fellow of the Institute of Cancer Research.
