NEWS DIGEST– President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is preparing to launch an electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System (e-CRVS) in Nigeria.

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Kwarra, made the official announcement during a pre-launch briefing on November 6, 2023. The e-CRVS system is a comprehensive platform that will cover a wide range of civil registrations, including birth registration, stillbirth registration, adoption, marriage and divorce notifications, migration records, and death records.

According to Kwarra, the launch of the e-CRVS by President Tinubu demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening civil registration data management in the country. The system will facilitate efficient data capturing, collation, processing, dissemination, and timely access to statistics on vital events. This move aligns with Nigeria’s aspirations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically in improving civil registration and vital statistics systems from 2023 to 2030.

The National Population Commission has collaborated closely with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to develop the e-CRVS Operational Readiness Assessment Report. This report emphasizes the potential of digital technologies in revolutionizing Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) in Nigeria. By securely and cost-effectively integrating data from various systems at scale, the e-CRVS system aims to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of civil registrations.

One notable feature of the e-CRVS system is the provision of digital certificates for all recorded cases. This ensures that registered organizations have accessible and verifiable platforms for certificate verification. Furthermore, the system will include a central management system represented through a user-friendly dashboard. This dashboard will analyze and interpret the collated civil registration data, providing vital statistics that can inform decision-making processes.
