President Bola Tinubu has expressed appreciation for the Supreme Court’s recent judgment affirming the constitutional rights of local governments, underscoring its pivotal role in advancing effective grassroots governance.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Tinubu, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, highlighted the judgment’s significance, describing it as a validation of constitutional principles.
Tinubu emphasized that ineffective local government administration has been a major impediment to national progress, with grassroots governance often lacking.
“The Renewed Hope Agenda is about all Nigerians, irrespective of faith, tribe, gender, or political affiliation,” Tinubu stated. “This judgment ensures that our people, especially the disadvantaged, can hold their local leaders accountable.”
He stressed that local council leaders now bear the responsibility to deliver services that directly benefit Nigerians at the grassroots.

Tinubu expressed confidence that the judgment would empower elected officials to manage local resources transparently and efficiently.
“Our administration pursued this case with the firm belief that our people deserve relief,” Tinubu remarked.
“Today’s judgment ensures that only elected local officials will control community resources, marking a significant step towards restructuring our nation for greater equity and prosperity.”
Tinubu also acknowledged the Supreme Court’s role in upholding local governments’ constitutional rights, particularly regarding financial autonomy, describing the decision as historic.
He commended the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for his dedicated efforts in the legal battle.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to governance principles that benefit every Nigerian,” Tinubu affirmed, pledging to uphold a system that fosters national development through accountable and efficient governance at all levels.
