A meeting between President Bola Tinubu and labour union leaders aimed at finalizing the minimum wage agreement has been adjourned until next week.

The session, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, concluded after approximately one hour of discussions.

Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Nigerian Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero clarified that the gathering focused more on discussion than negotiation. “In essence, it was a discussion, not a negotiation.

We have had that discussion and agreed to possibly reassess terms before reconvening next week,” he stated. “We did not delve into specific figures. Nevertheless, we reached consensus on some fundamental issues.”

Regarding the N250,000 figure proposed by the NLC, Ajaero explained, “We refrained from detailed financial discussions today.

The current figures of N250,000 and N62,000 remain unchanged until we resume discussions.”

Meanwhile, Trade Union Congress President Comrade Osifo highlighted that labour representatives presented key economic indicators affecting Nigerians, including the depreciation of the naira and its impact on commodity prices.

“We outlined these issues to President Tinubu, emphasizing their direct impact on citizens’ lives,” Osifo noted. “As the President of the nation, the ultimate decision lies with him.

We have presented our case comprehensively, touching on macroeconomic, fiscal, and monetary concerns.”

He added, “After the President provided his perspective, we collectively agreed to adjourn for internal deliberations.

We will reconvene in a week to continue our dialogue.”

The meeting underscores ongoing efforts to address economic challenges and ensure equitable policies for Nigerian workers.
