The Bundesliga has secured a fifth Champions League spot for the upcoming season, leaving the Premier League behind due to the underwhelming performance of English clubs in European competitions.

An extra spot in the revamped 36-team league phase for the 2024/25 season will be awarded to the top-performing club from each of the two countries in European club competition this season.

Germany can no longer be caught by England after Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 semi-final first-leg victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

Italy, who currently lead UEFA’s points table, won the first European Performance Spot last month. Regardless of how well England performs in the Europa Conference League with Aston Villa, England is not eligible for an additional berth.

In order to go to the Champions League, Villa must now maintain their fourth-place finish in the Premier League.

Although they lead Tottenham by seven points, Unai Emery’s team still has two games remaining.
