The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged attempt to detonate an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Governor Sim Fubara reported that an attempt was made to detonate an IED at the Hotel Presidential in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. However, the attack was unsuccessful.

Regarding the failed bomb attempt, the state Police Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that a male suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident. In a statement, Iringe-Koko urged residents to remain calm as police detectives actively pursue leads to identify the sponsors behind the attempt.

“The command has launched a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the cause and circumstances surrounding the unfortunate event. We have identified one individual in connection with the explosion and urge residents to remain calm,” Iringe-Koko stated.

She added that efforts are underway to gather crucial information and shed light on the situation. The police thanked the public for providing information, pictures, and videos to assist in the ongoing investigation.

“Anyone who sees any suspicious object should evacuate the area immediately and promptly notify the police,” she advised.
