The Nigerian Police Force has denied rumours making the rounds that it planned to raid the students’ lodge of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, over the alleged presence of suspected internet fraudsters, known as “Yahoo boys”.

In a letter circulating online and purportedly written by the Lapai divisional police officer, Yusuf Musa, had said the police received reports of high cybercrime activities by the university students from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The letter, which was purportedly addressed to the university management, said the operation would be carried out on April 11.

But the spokesperson of the Niger State police command l, Wasiu Abiodun, in a terse statement to our correspondent, disowned the letter.

He said the letter was fake and didn’t emanate from the division.

He also said investigations are ongoing to arrest the source of the letter.

“It’s fake. It does not originate from the division.

“It’s under investigation with a view to arresting the mischief maker,” Mr Abiodun said.
