The Labour Party’s leadership declared on Friday that Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate; Alex Oti, the governor of Abia State; legislators chosen on the party’s platform; and prominent figures from the Obidient Movement will spearhead the campaign for governor of Akure, the capital of Ondo State.

This was revealed in a statement released jointly by Olusola Ayodele, the chairman of the LP governorship primary in Ondo, and Obiora Ifoh, the party’s national publicity secretary.

Ayodele stated that the party is ready to support Dr. Ayodele Olorunfemi, their candidate, all the way to victory in the November 16 governorship election, saying that they are prepared to save the state from the All Progressives Congress government.

Popular unionist Olorunfemi was re-elected without opposition on April 27 during the party’s governorship primary held at the Secretariat in Akure.

Formerly serving as the General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria affiliate, the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies, was his position.

Ayodele, who ran the Ondo primary two weeks ago, announced to the party’s South-West leadership in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Friday that a task force had been established to expedite the governorship campaign’s preparations.

Ayodele, who is also the Deputy State Chairman of the LP in Oyo State, clarified that the task force is made up of important party figures in the Southwest who are tasked with organizing a formidable national campaign team capable of replicating the triumph of the late Governor Olusegun Mimiko in 2013.

He said, “To lead the Ondo National Campaign Committee is the Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi and Governor of Abia State, Mr Alex Oti.

“They are to be supported by all LP senators, reps members, state lawmakers, and other key leaders of the Party in the country with formidable solidarity from key members of the Obidient Movement in the diaspora.”

Regarding the date of the electioneering campaign’s official launch, the chairman remained silent.

However, there were hints from the party that the incumbent LP candidate for governor of Ondo was only given the ticket as a temporary stand-in and would be replaced by a stronger candidate before November.

However, Ayodele brushed off the rumors, stating that such a move would only be possible if the incumbent governorship candidate chose to drop out of the race within the INEC-created substitution window that has the National Working Committee’s approval.

However, the deputy state chairman of the LP confirmed that a few disgruntled governorship candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party and the ruling All Progressives Congress are currently in discussions with the LP regarding the possibility of defecting to the LP.
