Opposition parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) have both released statements discrediting President Tinubu’s New Year address as a “harvest of deceit” and an “arrogant display of dishonesty.”

Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, criticised the President for his rhetoric and failure to address the critical issues of insecurity, 28% inflation rate, unemployment and the continuing plunge of the Naira.

Ologunagba reckoned that a sizable number of the critical issues were “occasioned by the reckless, ill-advised and insensitive policies and programmes” of the Tinubu administration.

He expressed outrage at President Tinubu’s assertion that all his actions and decisions since assuming office on May 29 have been in the best interest of the country.

“On the contrary, all decisions and actions of the Tinubu Presidency including the approval of an increase in the pump price of fuel from N167 to over N700 per litre, devaluation of the naira with the consequential high costs and hardship […] cannot be said to be in the interest of our country,” Ologunagba said.

Ologunagba also raised issues with the 2024 budget which he claims favours luxury spending by the Presidency and APC leaders, wasteful trips by political cronies and fails to address the mindless killings across the nation.

“President Tinubu ought to have used the opportunity presented by the New Year to apologize to Nigerians and marshal out steps to address our national challenges, including those responsible for the exiting of multinational manufacturing companies and other businesses from our country,” he said.

Similarly, the Labour Party accused the President of dishonesty in his address to Nigerians.

Obiora Ifoh, LP National Publicity Secretary, expressed his dismay at the lack of empathy shown for the families of over 200 persons killed by terrorists during the Christmas Eve massacre in Plateau State.

“The President’s helplessness in the face of his glaring failure to address the critical issues of insecurity, decayed infrastructure, the collapse of the manufacturing and productive sectors, inflation, and the Naira to Dollar exchange rate which is spiralling out of control is written all over the speech,” he said.
