The Ondo state government has laid out a variety of initiatives meant to reduce the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the citizens of the state.

Beginning in August, the state government will begin making monthly payments of N10,000 to pensioners and vulnerable members of society. According to State Commissioner for Finance Wale Akinterinwa, the aid will last till the end of the year.

The state government will also deliver food packages to a million homes across the state’s 18 local government regions, as well as financial assistance to businesses and students.

Mr Akinterinwa, who chairs the State Committee for Palliative Strategy and Implementation, said in a statement that financial assistance for businesses “will be disbursed through existing government channels.”

Students from around the state who own businesses were urged to apply for financial aid. “Students who are engaged in nano businesses on campus are not excluded. They will also get financial support.”

Furthermore, the state government has committed to providing free shuttle buses for students beginning next month through the end of the year, as well as charging reduced fees for shuttle buses next year.

Mr Akinterinwa further said that the Akeredolu administration was considering purchasing CNG buses to transport public personnel to and from work for free till the end of the year.

Finally, Mr Akinterinwa added that farmers will be provided with subsidised agriculture inputs such as seeds, drugs and feeds to ensure food production across the state.
