The lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Ondo State House of Assembly have thrown their support behind Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as their preferred candidate for the upcoming governorship election on November 16.

Olamide Oladiji, the Speaker of the House, made this announcement to journalists following a private meeting with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) on Monday in Abuja.

The speaker stated that the purpose of the meeting was to thank the party’s leadership for its efforts in maintaining peace in the state following the passing of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

He commended Abdullahi Ganduje, the APC National Chairman, for his significant role in restoring peace within the state’s chapter.

“If not for your intervention, we wouldn’t have been enjoying the peace we enjoy in Ondo APC today,” the speaker said.

He further stated that the legislators in the state were aligned with the direction set by the party’s leadership and the administration led by President Bola Tinubu, and they would continue to work with them to realize the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He noted that Mr. Aiyedatiwa had already demonstrated his ability to effect positive changes within the state during his brief tenure in leadership.

“We will work to ensure the continuity of his government and the APC in Ondo State.

“The state is at peace under its new governor contrary to what those outside it may say. Aiyedatiwa’s achievement just in few months in office is there for all to see.

“He has continued the legacy of the deceased governor and has been able to bring a synergy between the judiciary and the state executive,” he said.

In his response, Mr Ganduje also thanked the lawmakers for their visit and expressed satisfaction that the party’s leadership had managed to resolve the crisis within the state chapter.

Mr Ganduje acknowledged that while the party had devised a well-planned program to select a deserving gubernatorial candidate, the cooperation of its members was crucial to ensuring a successful primary election to nominate the candidate for governorship.

The APC had set April as the date for the state governorship primaries.

Mr Aiyedatiwa, who previously served as the deputy to the late Mr Akeredolu, assumed the position of governor following his demise in December 2023 in respect to the constitution.
