French President Emmanuel Macron said Saturday he hoped star footballer Kylian Mbappe would be freed up by his likely future club Real Madrid to take part in the Paris Olympics for France.

“I’m counting on Real Madrid to free up Kylian for the Olympic Games so he can come play with the French team,” Macron said in a video posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Mbappe announced on Friday that he will depart from Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning French champion, at the end of the current campaign. Real Madrid is most likely to be Mbappe’s next stop.

“I wanted to let everyone know that this is my final season at Paris Saint-Germain. In a video that was uploaded to social media, Mbappe declared, “I will not prolong and the adventure will come to an end in a few weeks.”

Real Madrid has previously declared that it will not waive its players’ club obligations in order to allow them to compete in the Olympic Games, which are not included in the list of international competitions that FIFA has designated as needing player availability.

The 25-year-old forward who led France to victory in the World Cup and admitted to himself last week that he wasn’t “thinking much” about the Games.

At Euro 2024, which takes place in Germany from June 14 to July 14, Mbappe will lead France.

The Olympic football competition begins on July 24 and runs to August 9, with France in a group alongside the United States, New Zealand and another side still to be determined.
