The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday, said the Force had deployed its personnel and put them on red alert in anticipation of the planned protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress starting tomorrow.

This was disclosed in a statement made in Abuja by the Force’s spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Monday.

He expressed that the deployment was made in recognition of citizens’ fundamental right to peaceful protest that complies with the law.

Adejobi stated that the idea was in line with the Nigeria Police’s pledge to protect the rights and freedoms of protesters.

“In line with its lawful duty to maintain law and order, the Nigeria police force has deployed personnel nationwide and placed them on red alert to monitor the planned protest.

“All Commissioners of Police and their respective supervising officers have been briefed and instructed to coordinate the officers on ground in ensuring the safety and security of all the protesters.

“While recognising the importance of peaceful protest, the force remains vigilant against any attempts to hijack such protests by individuals or groups with sinister intents,” he said.

The spokesperson stated that the Force was ready to act immediately and decisively in response to any illegal activity or violent acts that pose a threat to the public’s safety, security, or peace.

He said its important to note that the police have extended its reach across the country to thwart any attempts by certain individuals to use the broad rallies as a springboard to stir up scandal.

He said that the police would not tolerate the wanton breakdown of law and order, the loss of life and property that has occasionally occurred in the past in different areas of the nation.

Egbetokun furthet urged protesters to behave properly and peacefully.
