The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the immediate disbursement of the salaries that were withheld from the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

Joe Ajaero, the NLC president, urged the federal government to settle the outstanding salaries for the past four months to prevent any disruption in the academic sector.

In a statement released in Abuja on Monday, the NLC president noted that at a time when confidence was being rebuilt in public universities, it would be detrimental for the government to instigate another strike.

It should be noted that the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU had instructed its members to commence a seven-day warning strike starting from March 18th due to the non-payment of their salaries as approved by President Bola Tinubu.

The four-month salary arrears stem from the nationwide strike conducted by all unions in public universities across the country.

While the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) received full payment for the withheld salaries, NASU and SSANU allegedly did not receive their full entitlements.
