NIMC announces temporary suspension of NIN verification

NEWS DIGEST – The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has notified the general public of the brief suspension of the National Identity Number (NIN) verification number.

NIN was in August 2014 introduced by the former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

In a notice by the Commission during the weekend, it disclosed said the suspension was as a result of maintenance action being carried out by one of the Commission’s network service providers.

The notice read, “The National identity Management Commission (NIMC) wishes to inform the general public that its NIN Verification Service (NVS) is temporarily unavailable due to the maintenance service being carried out by one of the Commission’s network service providers.”

NIMC assures the public that verification and authentication services would be restored once the maintenance is concluded.

It apologies for any inconvenience the suspension might have caused Nigerians while assuring that all hands are on deck to ensure speedy restoration.

NIMC urged the general public to make use of other options such as the Tokenisation verification platform while ensuring that the verification and authentication will be restored once the maintenance is concluded.

However, in the notice, the Commission states that “The public can make use of the alternative Tokenization verification platform.”

News Digest had earlier reported in January that the Commission’s website was hacked and millions of NIN belonging to Nigerians were stolen.

The Commission, however, debunked the server breach, saying the commission has ensured maximum security of its systems and database because of the critical nature of the identity data, which the NIMC collects, manages, and maintains as critical assets for the country.
