NEWS DIGEST– Nigerian elite referee and proud FIFA badge holder, Yemisi Akintoye, has achieved a remarkable feat by being selected to officiate at the prestigious 2023 African Women’s Champions League. This exciting event is set to transpire in Cote d’Ivoire from November 5 to November 19, showcasing Africa’s top women’s football talent.

Akintoye, a distinguished alumna of the University of Lagos, emerged as one of the 17 referees shortlisted from across the African continent. Out of this elite group, she was one of the 12 referees chosen after successfully completing an intensive one-week pre-tournament course.

The official confirmation of Akintoye’s participation in the 2023 African Women’s Champions League was made by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in a statement released on Monday. This notable achievement is a testament to her expertise and dedication to the sport.

Notably, Yemisi Akintoye will share the officiating duties with Salma Musaganda of Rwanda, who made history as the first African woman referee to officiate at the men’s World Cup. Together, they will contribute to the success of this prestigious women’s football event.

Akintoye’s journey to becoming a FIFA Referee began in 2021, marking a significant milestone in her officiating career. Over the years, she has showcased her skills on the international stage by participating in various competitions, including the WAFU Women Champion’s League and the Aisha Buhari Tournament, among others.
