The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will shortly return to issuing permits to car owners who use tinted glasses.

The return of tinted glass permits is intended to assist in controlling the country’s rising rate of criminal activity.

Even though police patrol teams were previously instructed to conduct routine stop and searches on vehicles with tinted glass, they were banned from requesting tinted glass permits from motorists.

In an interview on Wednesday, Police Spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi explained that state commands had presented several accounts of crimes committed by people driving tinted vehicles, emphasising the need to return permits suspended in March 2022.

“The Inspector-General of Police has set up a committee to review it. We are going back to it because it is a matter of law,” ACP Adejobi said.

“Many youths have started using tinted glass to commit crimes and various states are complaining. So, we need to look into it and make a decision.”

ACP Adejobi further stated that the committee was working on a new policy to regulate the use of vehicles with revolving lights, covered number plates, unregistered vehicles, and vehicle logos that replace number plates.

He pointed out that these features were illegal in the country and are often used by criminals to evade detection. “We are looking into these things and when the time comes we will make policy statements on them and checkmate these excesses,” he said.
