The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has raised concerns over anticipated severe floods in specific Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Rivers State.

Speaking at a workshop themed ‘Downscaling of flood early warning strategies for early actions’ in Port Harcourt, NEMA’s Director of Risk Reduction, Godwin Tepikor, urged Local Government authorities to collaborate closely to mitigate the impact of potential flooding.

Zonal Director Babatunde Adebiyi highlighted that NEMA has identified 13 LGAs at high risk, including Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Degema, and Ahoada East and West, among others. Adebiyi emphasized NEMA’s ongoing efforts to prepare these areas for the impending flood.

Earlier, the agency had predicted moderate flooding in eight LGAs of Zamfara State during the 2024 rainy season. Zubaida Umar, Director-General of NEMA in Zamfara, named Bugundu, Gummi, Gusau, Bakura, Maradun, Talata Mafara, Shinkafi, and Zurmi as the affected LGAs.

Umar urged Nigerians to unite in protecting communities, critical infrastructure, and ensuring uninterrupted socio-economic activities amidst the flood threats.

The Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) 2024 Annual Flood Outlook reported that 31 states with 148 LGAs face high flood risks, while 35 states including the FCT with 249 LGAs are at moderate risk.

The remaining 377 LGAs are projected to have low flood risks.
