NDPHC’s MD Ugbo Gets 4 years Tenure Renewal, 3 Others

NEWS DIGEST – President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the renewal of the appointment of Mr Joseph Chiedu Ugbo as the Managing Director of Niger Delta Power Holding Company and Messrs Babayo Shehu and Ifeoluwa Oyedele as Executive Directors respectively. This renewal will take effect from August 25, 2020 for a period of four (4) years.

A statement signed by Mr Yakubu Lawal, the General Manager, Communications and Public Relations of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company(NDPHC), indicates that the appointment of three (3) additional directors have also been approved for more effective and efficient coverage of the company’s areas of activity.

Their appointments may not be unconnected to sheer magnitude of their antecedents, work exposure and experience.

Take for instance the case of the Managing Director and Chief Executive Mr. Chiedu Ugbo. It appeared he had long been prepared to pilot the affairs of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC). His former position as the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Power Privatization in the Office of the Vice President, coupled with the position of acting Head of the Advisory Power Team in the Office of the Vice President, actually prepared him for the assignment.

Since coming on board, Ugbo and his management team had been applying themselves to the achievement of the company’s mandate. Their subsequent reappointment by the presidency was thus a product of their exemplary and painstaking leadership model in the effective management of the company’s affairs and resources.

The management seems to have adopted deliberate and focused re-engineering of the firm’s administrative mechanism geared towards effective pursuit of set-goals.

Bringing to bear his pedigree as an electric energy law specialist, and also acting in concert with his management team, Ugbo has succeeded in expanding the frontiers of NDPHC’s influence in the power subsector.

It has been counted for NDPHC that under the watch of the current management led by Ugbo, they inaugurated two injection substations at Aminkale and Abule Taylor areas of Alimosho Local Government Area in Lagos as part of efforts to boost power supply in the State.

Worthy of note is the Amikanle National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP) 1x15MVA, 33/11KV injection substation takes supply from Ayobo Transmission Station through a dedicated 22.5km of 33KV feeder constructed by the NIPP while the Abule Taylor NIPP 1x15MVA, 33/11KV injection substation takes supply from Ayobo TS through a 48km of 33KV feeder constructed by the NIPP.

The Amikanle substation currently has a peak load of 7.7MW while the 33kV feeder has between 7MW and 8MW peak load due to point load customers. Abule Taylor currently has a peak load of 4.4MW while the 33kV feeder has 6MW peak load due to point load customers.

The NDPHC has completed over 43 projects in the last two years. Recently, it commissioned a 15MVA, 33/11kv injection substation worth over N200 million at Agwan Dosa, Kaduna for increased power supplies within the area and several surrounding locations.

Several other projects have been flagged off across the nation to improve supply including the construction of a 330 kilovolt (kv) transmission substation worth N5.49bn in Lafia, Nasarawa state.

In Yola, the company constructed and handed over 16 injection distribution sub-stations to Yola DisCo to further boost electricity supply to Nigerians in the North-East zone. The sixteen distribution substations were parts of the 25 power distribution projects embarked upon in the northeast zone. According to the NDPHC, the projects were aimed at addressing economic challenges and poverty in the zone. What made the intervention imperative was the devastation caused by the Boko Haram insurgency. About N11billion electricity infrastructure, especially distribution and transmission networks in the region, was destroyed, thus disrupting economic activities and livelihood of the populace.

The NDPHC led by Ugbo is reportedly galvanizing and channeling budgetary appropriations to infrastructure development countrywide. The company is being guided to target the area of expanding power infrastructure, including renewable energy to mitigate key challenges.

Meanwhile, the company is being applauded for standing up to the power challenges in the country through recognition and awards. The latest of such recognition is the award received by Mr Ugbo from the Daily Independent Newspapers.
The Company was recognized during the 2019 edition of the annual “Pacesetters Independent Newspaper Awards” held in Lagos.

In his acceptance speech, The Managing Director of NDPHC, Mr Chiedu Ugbo thanked the newspaper for the award whilst dedicating same to the wonderful team of professionals he said he was privileged to work with.
He confirmed that despite the many challenges inherent in the power sector, NDPHC was still at the forefront of delivering qualitative service to its customers and industry stakeholders and would continue to set new benchmarks in the years to come.
