Nigeria has experienced its sixth power grid failure of 2024, resulting in a drastic drop in electricity generation from 2,583.77MW at 2am on Monday to just 64.7MW by 3am.

With an average electricity generation of 4,000MW, serving approximately 200 million citizens, the nation faces significant challenges.

These include gas supply limitations, vandalism of transmission infrastructure, and financial instability, contributing to the frequent grid failures.

According to data from the Independent System Operator, only one electricity generation company, Ibom Power, was operational during the collapse.

Although power generation briefly increased to 132.29MW an hour later, the grid’s instability persists, as confirmed by the Jos Electricity Distribution Company.

The Head, Corporate Affairs, JEDC, Dr Friday Elijah, in a notice to customers, said, “The current outage being experienced within our franchise states is a result of loss of power supply from the national grid.

“The loss of power supply from the national grid occurred in the early hours at about 0242hours of today, Monday, April 15, 2024, hence the loss of power supply on all our feeders.”

Elijah, however, expressed hope that the grid would be restored for normal power supply to electricity consumers.
