The Nasarawa State government has expressed its full support for the Supreme Court’s recent judgment granting full autonomy to the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the country. This endorsement was conveyed in a press statement released on Friday by the State’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Labaran Magaji.

The statement highlighted the positive implications of the judgment for grassroots democracy and local governance. According to Magaji, the autonomy granted to the LGAs will empower local authorities to make impactful decisions and enhance democratic governance at the grassroots level.

“I, Labaran Shuaibu Magaji Esq, the Honourable Attorney-General of Nasarawa State, wish to express our profound appreciation for the landmark judgment delivered by the Supreme Court in Suit No: SC/CV/343/2004, which grants autonomy to local governments,” the statement read. “This judgment marks a significant milestone in the evolution of our democracy and the protection of local government funds from undue interference.”

Under the leadership of Governor Abdullahi Sule, Nasarawa State is committed to upholding the principles of democracy, transparency, and good governance. The state government believes that the Supreme Court’s decision aligns with these values and will ensure that resources intended for grassroots development are used effectively for the benefit of the people.

“The democratic setup at the local government level, as well as the non-tampering with local government funds, which characterizes our government, will ensure that resources meant for grassroots development are utilized for the benefit of our people,” Magaji added.

He further emphasized that the judgment will enhance the democratic framework at the grassroots level by empowering local authorities to make decisions that directly impact the lives of the residents. This autonomy is expected to lead to greater efficiency, improved service delivery, and increased development at the local level.

“In Nasarawa State, we will study the letters of the judgment and set machinery in motion even as we are fully committed to supporting and implementing the judgment to ensure that our local governments operate independently, transparently, and accountably,” the statement continued. “We believe that this autonomy will lead to greater efficiency, improved service delivery, and increased development at the grassroots level.”

Magaji called on all relevant stakeholders, including local government officials, civil society organizations, and the general public, to support the judgment and work together to harness its positive effects for the benefit of all residents of Nasarawa State.
