The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has unveiled intentions to lead an international effort to bolster the security of undersea cables.

This announcement was made by the minister via X handle on Sunday.

Tijani stressed the importance of reassessing international regulations and establishing partnerships with regional and global organizations to expedite measures aimed at protecting this crucial infrastructure.

He also affirmed that the Nigerian Communications Commission is actively collaborating with all relevant stakeholders to promptly address the ongoing issues.

He stated that the endeavor represents a notable advancement in guaranteeing the durability and dependability of undersea cables, which are vital arteries in today’s interconnected global landscape.

Last Thursday, disruptions to the undersea cable that provides broadband Internet access to Nigeria and neighboring countries in the West African region compelled numerous banks, financial institutions, telecommunications companies, and related enterprises to reduce their activities.

The minister said submarine cable cuts, while disruptive, are proving to be a catalyst for resilience and growth in our digital economy.

He commended the telcos, Globacom, West Indian Ocean Cable Company, MTN, and MainOne, who have demonstrated commendable selflessness by collaborating to mitigate the impact of these cuts.

Tijani wrote, “I must commend the selflessness shown by the leadership of @GloWorld @WIOCC_ @MTNNG @Mainoneservice and the entire sector in coming together to limit the impact of the cuts. Your actions are helping us all to better prepare for the future.

“This is also an opportunity for us to review international laws and collaborations to adequately protect undersea cables, and I will be engaging regional and global bodies to accelerate efforts on this crucial agenda.

“To those experiencing disruption, please rest assured that @NgComCommission is working with all key stakeholders to resolve the matter in the shortest possible time.”
