Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador declared achieving “important agreements” in discussions with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The talks, centered in Mexico City, aimed to address economic cooperation, security, and migration.

Lopez Obrador, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), emphasized the significance of these agreements for both nations, highlighting the necessity of a policy of good neighborliness. The post-Christmas visit by Blinken and Mayorkas underscores President Biden’s commitment to addressing the escalating migration issue, a key concern for Republican lawmakers linking it to their support for Ukraine.

With approximately 10,000 daily migrant crossings reported by US border police in recent weeks, the discussions are crucial in the context of the record 2.4 million encounters during the previous fiscal year.

“Important agreements were reached for the benefit of our peoples and nations,” Lopez Obrador posted on X, formerly
Twitter, without providing additional details.

“Now, more than ever, the policy of good neighborliness is indispensable.”
