Argentina captain and Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has said he would only participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup if he feels physically capable of contributing to the national team.

In a post shared by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on X, Messi expressed excitement about the prospect of playing in the tournament but stressed that his decision would depend on his fitness and ability to help the team.

“I’m excited for the World Cup. But I don’t want to be a burden. I want to feel good physically and be sure that I can help and contribute to the group. I will see day by day if I really feel good enough to participate,” he said.

Messi, who will turn 39 during the 2026 World Cup, led Argentina to victory at the 2022 edition in Qatar, finally achieving the one major title that had eluded him in his career.

Since that triumph, there has been speculation about whether the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will extend his international career to defend the title in North America.

Despite joining Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has continued to play for Argentina in World Cup qualifiers, delivering solid performances that suggest he could still play at the highest level.

For now, Messi remains focused on maintaining his fitness and contributing to both club and country. His final decision on whether to compete in the 2026 World Cup will depend on his physical condition and ability to meet his own performance standards.
