MATAN Pledges Support Following Tragic Fire at Karu International Market

NEWS DIGEST – The Market Traders Association of Nigeria (MATAN) extends its heartfelt condolences to the traders and families affected by the recent devastating fire at Karu International Market in Abuja. The fire, which occurred last Thursday, has resulted in significant losses of property and goods for many individuals.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of Karu International Market, Amb. Olakunle Moses Johnson, National Secretary/Chairman of the National Steering Committee (VDI), expressed deep sympathy on behalf of the Association.

“We received with deep sorrow the news of the fire that ravaged Karu International Market last Thursday. Our hearts go out to all those who have suffered losses due to this unfortunate incident,” the letter stated.

Recognizing the urgent need for coordinated action to prevent such tragedies in the future, Amb. Johnson emphasized the importance of improved fire safety measures and access to the market premises. “We understand that inadequate firefighting resources and restricted access to certain areas of the market contributed to the extent of the damage. We are committed to working closely with market leadership in Abuja to address these challenges and implement effective solutions,” he affirmed.

As part of their proactive measures, the Association plans to investigate the causes of the fire at Karu market to prevent similar occurrences elsewhere. Amb. Johnson also encouraged all market traders in Karu and across the Federal Capital Territory to register with the MATAN Integrated Market Traders Revenue Management System on VDI. This initiative aims to provide essential services, including insurance coverage, to mitigate the impact of calamities like the recent fire.

“We assure the leaders and traders of Karu International Market, as well as those across Abuja, of our unwavering support during this difficult time. Our priority is to assist in rebuilding and securing the future livelihoods of those affected,” Amb. Johnson affirmed.

In closing, Amb. Johnson reiterated the Association’s condolences and prayers for the affected individuals and their families. “May God comfort and restore all who have suffered losses in this tragic event,” he concluded.
