A middle-aged man known only as Onuora is being held by the Inland Town Police Division in Onitsha after it is claimed that he sexually assaulted a schoolgirl in the Anambra State town.

It was learned that security personnel, who had been pursuing the suspect, had arrested him at the Ado Girls Secondary School in Onitsha.

Our correspondent was informed by a police source that the suspect frequently set up ambush around the school, waiting for his victim.

Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, has demanded that the suspect be placed under remand following his arrest.

In a statement released on Sunday, the state commissioner for education, prof. Ngozi Chumthe a-Udeh, said that the governor had specifically asked for the suspected rapist to be placed under arrest at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka, while the investigation into the alleged rape case is still ongoing.

“Meanwhile, the suspect has been arrested and detained at the Inland Town Police Division Onitsha.

“Governor Soludo, who frowned at such a terrible and nefarious act of preying on the innocent, vowed to take every legally available means to bring the perpetrator to book in hopes that this will serve as a deterrent to others.

“The governor enjoined the Ndi Anambra to speak up in the face of such abhorrent acts,” the commissioner added.

In the meantime, calls and multiple messages left on DSP Tochukwu Ikenga’s phone were not answered, making it impossible to get him to provide more information.

Remember that a few months ago, the Anambra State Police command detained and arrested no fewer than eleven suspects in a variety of rape and defilement cases?

According to Ikenga, who made this announcement in a statement, the suspects were apprehended within a week in a number of different state locations.

He went on to say that after the investigation was finished, Aderemi Adeoye, the Commissioner of Police, ordered that all of the suspects who had been indicted during the investigation be promptly arraigned in court.
