A 37-year-old man, John Nelson, has appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday on allegations of shoplifting and N560,000 theft.

The defendant is charged with two counts of breaking and entering and theft; his residential address was withheld.

At Makanjuola Street, Orile Iganmu, Lagos, on January 25, the defendant committed the offenses, according to the prosecutor, Inspector Christopher Okoliko, who testified in court.

Mr Okoliko disclosed that the defendant broke into Obinna Nwokpuru’s store with force and took N560,000 in cash.

He also said the defendant stole power banks and speakers that were worth N58,500.

According to the prosecution, the offenses violated sections 287 and 307 (b) of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Law.

Chief magistrate Olubunmi Gbenga granted the defendant a bail of N150,000, accompanied by a single dependable surety in the same amount.

She ordered the sureties to provide proof of their tax payments to the Lagos government and to have the court confirm their residences.

The subject was postponed until March 1st for discussion by Ms. Gbenga.
