Former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui has been named the new head coach of West Ham, succeeding David Moyes. Moyes, who led the Hammers to victory in the UEFA Conference League during the 2022/23 season, departed the club “by mutual consent” after his contract expired at the end of the Premier League season.
Lopetegui, 57, will collaborate closely with technical director Tim Steidten, who will have increased control over player recruitment. This marks a shift from the previous model, where Moyes had significant influence over transfers upon his reappointment in 2019. With Steidten’s arrival last summer, West Ham is transitioning to a more European-based recruitment approach.
“I believe we have a fantastic platform,” Lopetegui remarked. “The last few years have built a strong foundation, but my ambition is to achieve more, improve the players and the team, and compete at the highest level. We are very ambitious and committed to this journey.

In a December interview with Sky Sports News reporter Danyal Khan, Lopetegui shared his desire to return to the Premier League, citing unfinished business. He mentioned meeting with the PFA, LMA, and PGMOL during his time off to prepare for his return to England’s top division.
“I declined opportunities in other countries because I want to stay in England. This league is special, the most competitive in the world, and the best environment for players, coaches, and fans,” Lopetegui said.
