Lawmaker defends himself from armed robbers who attacked his home

NEWS DIGEST – Abdullahi Salame, a member of the House of Representatives, has disclosed that there was an attack on his home in Sokoto on Friday.

Salame, 59, said the attack was perpetrated at midnight on his Bado residence in the Sokoto Metropolis.
The APC lawmaker, who represents Gwadabawa and Illela constituency in Sokoto, said he fatally shot one of the intruders.

“Today at about 3 a.m., I was attacked in my house in Sokoto by armed robbers but by Allah’s powers, I was able to shoot and kill one (robber) and injured some. I am grateful,” Salame said.

Salame had served as acting governor of Sokoto in 2008 and speaker of the Sokoto assembly between 2007 and 2011. He chairs the house committee on poverty alleviation and seeks to be governor in 2023.

Bilal Goronyo, an advocate of Salame, reasoned that the attack had happened because Salame had stood on “truth and trust.”

“This Attacking is not the first time, it has been done to the people who stand because the society is facing this kind of challenge,” Goronyo said in a Facebook post after Friday’s attack.

Police spokesperson in Sokoto, Muhammad Sadiq, confirmed in a statement that there was an attempted robbery on Salame’s residence on Friday, adding that the swift response of the joint metropolitan police patrol helped to thwart the attack.

“The command also calls for calm and enjoins residents of Sokoto to promptly tender any useful information that could speed up the arrest of the perpetrators or help the ongoing investigation,” Sadiq said.
