The federal government has proposed a new minimum wage of N48,000 for Nigerian workers.

This proposition was communicated during the latest session of the tripartite committee meeting held on Wednesday.

However, labor representatives present at the meeting reportedly opposed the suggested increase.

In response to the proposed figure, leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) opted to walk out of the virtual meeting as a form of protest.

Expressing their discontent, a labor representative who participated in the discussions criticized the government’s perceived lack of commitment to providing workers with a wage that adequately addresses their living expenses.

“What the government has presented to us is wage reduction. This government is not serious about giving workers a living wage,” he said.

The spokesman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Benson Upah also confirmed labour’s position after the meeting.

“Yes we are out. We are about to address the press and you will get the details then,” Upah said.
