Kwara State Government Takes Action Against Street Beggars in Ilorin

NEWS DIGEST – The Kwara State Government has initiated a crackdown on street beggars in Ilorin, the state capital, in an effort to address the issue of beggars in the area.

The Commissioner for Social Development, Opeyemi Oluwakemi Afolashade, announced this during a recent evacuation operation conducted across the Ilorin metropolis.

The evacuation operation targeted various areas, including the G.R.A. axis to Babatunde Idiagbon Flyover in Tanke, Offa motorpark, Geri Alimi, Odoota, and parts of the Baba Ode-Dangote area, known for harboring a significant number of street beggars.

Expressing concern over the persistent non-compliance of some individuals who view begging as a lucrative activity, Afolashade criticized the practice as detrimental to the government’s efforts to enhance the livability and attractiveness of the state.

The evacuation operation received praise from residents present at the scenes, urging the state government to remain committed to eliminating the menace of street begging.

A total of 46 beggars were evacuated and transported to the ministry’s facility for rehabilitation and eventual repatriation, while their children were taken to the Children’s Reception Centre for immediate care and protection.

Speaking at the sites of the operation, the commissioner highlighted the negative impact of roadside begging on social and environmental aspects, emphasizing that it also poses security risks to residents.

“It is concerning that despite our concerted efforts, some beggars were found in possession of dangerous items such as daggers, knives, and charms,” Afolashade revealed, underscoring the need for decisive action against such individuals.
