The Nigerian Kickboxing Federation’s Technical Director, Kevin Onyika, expressed optimism that his nation would perform well at the November Kickboxing World Championship, which will be held in Albufeira, Portugal.

Onyika made this statement on Monday during the National Open trials’ ending ceremony in Abuja.

The trials to choose the top competitors for the 2017 Kickboxing World Championship later this year attracted about 50 kick boxers.

“This is a trial for the world championship in Portugal in November and we are using it to select the athletes that will represent Nigeria,” he said.

“We have a reasonable turnout and we are happy with the performance of the athletes and the ways they responded during the trials. We are hopeful we will have a good outing in November.”

The Technical Director added that the two-day event’s goal had been accomplished.

“Our intention is to be fair and open and give everybody the opportunity to showcase their talent so that we can get the best athletes that will give us what we want.”

“We can’t do selection without having a trial because you might leave out some athletes that are good but with the trials, we were able to get good athletes that we want, so I can tell you that the objective of the trials was achieved.”
