Katsina State Government has declared its intention to step up efforts to supply extension services and inputs to irrigation farmers in order to increase agricultural output and generate employment opportunities for the local communities.

Abdulkadir Mamman-Nasir, the Managing Director of the newly established Katsina State Irrigation Development Authority, on Tuesday, disclosed this to the media while outlining the authority’s mission.

The body, he added, was created in October 2023 with the goal of enhancing dry-season farming and raising agricultural yield.

Mamman-Nasir claims that since 95 per cent of the population is farming, the government will employ irrigation to improve everyone’s life.

In order to improve operations and provide farmers with better service, he said, the government would gather data from all affected parties.

According to Mr Mamman-Nasir, the authority would also visit irrigation sites to evaluate their functionality and determine how to improve their efficiency.

He clarified that in order to guarantee Katsina will have enough water for irrigation, the government would dig tube wells where needed.

In an effort to support farmers’ ability to increase production, he said they would place a greater focus on extension services.

Mr Mamman-Nasir stated that the government would give farmers sufficient information regarding water usage in order to minimize losses brought on by insufficient water,

He continued by saying that these kinds of endeavors will help to generate employment and stop young people from migrating from rural to urban areas.

Mr Mamman-Nasir added that the action would significantly lessen the problem of insecurity plaguing the state and other regions of the nation.
