NEWS DIGEST– Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has fulfilled his campaign promises of environmental sanitation, beautification, and public health promotion by initiating the “Operation Nazafah” program. The launch took place at Kofar Kwaru, Emir’s palace in Kano.

To support this initiative, the state government has purchased ten additional refuse evacuation trucks and enlisted the services of 4,500 street sweepers. These sweepers, employed on a casual contract basis under the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of major streets within the city.

Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of effective service delivery in refuse management and announced the procurement of two additional payloaders, as well as the repair of existing heavy-duty machines and vehicles.

Out of the 4,500 street cleaners, 3,000 are members of the well-known community security volunteers, “Askarawan Kwankwasiyya,” led by Alhaji Saminu Balago Yakasai. The remaining 1,500 sweepers were engaged by the previous administration under Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. These individuals went through a screening process at the beginning of the current administration.

The Governor called upon all beneficiaries of this initiative to dedicate themselves to their assignments, providing selfless service to achieve the desired goal of creating a clean and safe city for all residents.

Furthermore, Governor Yusuf revealed plans for the State Government to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the conversion of refuse into fertilizer. This environmentally friendly approach not only contributes to a healthier environment but also generates additional job opportunities and revenue for the government.

The Managing Director of REMASAB, Alhaji  Amadu Haruna Zago, reassured the Governor that strict monitoring of the street sweepers’ operations would be conducted periodically. This monitoring aims to ensure effective service delivery, aligning with the vision of the current administration.
