The Kano state government announced on Thursday that it has set aside N854 million for the Auren Zaurawa Mass Wedding Initiative, which seeks to reduce social vices such as prostitution, drug abuse, and criminal behaviour caused by the state’s growing number of unmarried couples.

According to Governor Yusuf, the Kano State Executive Council approved the release of funding for the first phase of the programme on Wednesday.

The Initiative is expected to facilitate the marriage of low-income couples and provide them with material support such as furniture, suits, gowns and monetary rewards

The News Digest understands that the program promotes Islamic ideals. Potential beneficiaries of the initiative must be indigenes of the state and Muslims who follow Islamic beliefs.

In addition, the State Executive Council announced the allocation of N700 million in funding to cover the tuition of 7,000 Kano indigenes attending Bayero University, Kano.

“As part of our efforts to cushion the biting effects of our current economic reality, the Kano State Executive Council under my leadership has today, approved the release of the sum of N700m to settle tuition fees for 7,000 students of Bayero University, Kano,” Governor Abba Yusuf wrote on X.

He said that more information on how to apply for tuition support would be provided in due course.
