Kano Council chairmanship: Accept or resign, Ganduje tells Emir Sanusi

NEWS DIGEST – The governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has given two days’ ultimatum to the Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II to accept the chairmanship of the Kano Council of Chiefs.

On December 9, Mr Ganduje announced the appointment of Mr Sanusi as the council chairman and directed him to “immediately summon the inaugural meeting of the Council in accordance with the provisions of the Law.”

Sources close to the emir disclosed that the emir replied to the letter on December 12, informing the governor about pending court cases in order avoid contempt of court.

But in a reply signed by Musa Bichi, the Permanent Secretary Special Duties in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, the governor brushed aside the emir’s observations and directed him to accept or reject the appointment within two days.

“Accordingly, and by this letter, His Excellency the Executive Governor is requesting His Highness the Emir of Kano (Sarkin Kano) to indicate his ACCEPTANCE or OTHERWISE of his appointment as CHAIRMAN of the Kano State Council of Chiefs as conveyed vide letter No SSG/REPA/S/A86/T and dated 9th December, 2019. The acceptance or otherwise should reached (sic) His Excellency the Executive Governor of Kano State within two days of the receipt of this letter.

“As you awaits (sic) further directive of His Excellency the Executive Governor on the matter, it is important to accept the appointment or otherwise.”
