The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has decided to appoint a foreign technical adviser for the Senior Men’s National Team, the Super Eagles, following a series of disappointing performances under current coach Finidi George.

In a statement released after their board meeting on Wednesday, the NFF Executive Committee announced its decision to bring in an expatriate Technical Adviser.

This move is set to take place in the coming weeks, ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

“The Committee resolved to beef up the NFF Technical Department with more qualitative hands. Equally, the Technical and Development Sub-Committee will be re-jigged with immediate effect,” a communique released after the meeting said.

The communique did not specify whether the current Super Eagles coach will continue to work under the new foreign adviser or be dismissed.

The NFF Executive Committee apologized to Nigerians for the team’s poor performances, resulting in just four wins out of ten matches in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

They pledged to implement necessary measures to ensure a better-prepared squad for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September and the continuation of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.

Additionally, the Board expressed dissatisfaction with some players’ lackluster attitude towards national duties and agreed to enhance scouting efforts to find outstanding Nigeria-eligible players worldwide who can significantly strengthen the team.

Football analysts have questioned the current coach’s technical and tactical abilities after overseeing two poorly executed matches in the World Cup qualifiers.

The Nigerian team drew against South Africa in Uyo and lost to Benin Republic in an away match three days later.
