In a stunning start to the Euro 2024 opener, Albania’s Nedim Bajrami made history by scoring the fastest goal in European Championship history, finding the net just 23 seconds into the match.

This early lead, however, proved fleeting as Italy battled back for a hard-earned victory in Dortmund.

Bajrami capitalized on a critical error by Federico Dimarco during a throw-in, sending the ball into the top right corner and momentarily silencing the Italian supporters.

Yet, Albania’s initial jubilation was short-lived as Italy quickly regrouped.
Italy equalized in the 11th minute when Alessandro Bastoni headed home Lorenzo Pellegrini’s expertly delivered inswinging corner. Just five minutes later, Nicolo Barella’s powerful strike from 20 yards out put Italy ahead.

By halftime, Italy’s dominance was evident with 72.2% possession and 13 shots compared to Albania’s four.
Despite maintaining control in the second half, Italy struggled to extend their lead.

Albania’s defense, particularly goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha, who made several crucial saves, kept the scoreline at 2-1. Strakosha’s heroics included a spectacular save against Davide Frattesi’s attempt and a close-range block on Gianluca Scamacca.

Albania, though spirited, failed to threaten Italy significantly. Their best opportunity for an equalizer came late, but Gianluigi Donnarumma’s save on Rey Manaj’s effort sealed Italy’s first win of the tournament.

Italy, now under the guidance of Luciano Spalletti, displayed their ability to adapt and dominate despite an initial lapse. Key players like Jorginho and Federico Chiesa orchestrated Italy’s fluid attack, exploiting spaces and creating numerous chances.

Although their offensive efforts dwindled as the match progressed, Italy’s victory was never truly in jeopardy.
The Azzurri’s performance signaled a promising start as they aim to defend their title, despite challenging fixtures against Croatia and Spain looming ahead. For Albania, Bajrami’s historic goal and the spirited performance will be cherished memories, even as they face an uphill battle in their group.
