Ahead of the Edo State Governorship Election in September, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday, confirmed Asue Ighodalo as the candidate of the party.

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, the Chief Returning Officer and Head of the Governorship Primary Election Committee announced  Ighodalo as the winner after receiving 577 votes to overcome six other contenders, including Deputy Governor of the state, Philip Shaibu, who had one vote.

INEC observers were led by Anugbum Onuoha, the Edo Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).

In his acceptance address, Ighodalo pledged prosperity to all Edo people and thanked the delegates for their confidence in him.

He continued by promising to work hard to combat poverty and provide the populace with decent governance.

Recall that two former members of the House of Representatives – Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama and Omosede Igbinedion resigned minutes before the primary, leaving six to run for governor on the PDP ticket.

The other candidates who received no votes were Anslem Ojezua, Felix Akhabue, Martin Uhomoibhi, Hafia Hadizat Umoru, Osaro Onaiwu, and Arthur Esene.

Before this, PDP state chairman Tony Aziegbemi said that the party was prepared for the September governorship elections while extending a warm welcome to the Edo governorship primary election committee.
