On Thursday, the House of Representatives approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to extend the capital component of the 2023 Appropriation Act and the Supplementary Appropriation Act until December 31.

The approval followed a closed-door session, initiated due to opposition from some lawmakers. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read Tinubu’s letter requesting the extension during the plenary session.

In his letter, Tinubu explained that the extension would allow his administration to fully implement both budgets.

This extension pertains to the N21.8 trillion 2023 Budget and the N2.17 trillion 2023 Supplementary Budget, while the N27.5 trillion 2024 Budget runs concurrently.

The opposition from certain lawmakers led to a rowdy session and the closed-door meeting. After reconvening, the Speaker mentioned that the concerns of the opposing lawmakers were addressed and would be communicated to President Tinubu.

The bill subsequently passed through its first, second, and third readings within 20 minutes.
