Gunmen suspected to be bandits have raided Kawu Community in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The gunmen who were numbering about 40 abducted 23 persons, including a former Ward Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Alhassan Sidi Kawu.

The incident happened on Thursday in Kawu community, situated at the juncture of Kaduna and Niger states, fell prey to the brazen assault.

According to Abdulmumini Zakari, the councillor representing the community and Deputy Speaker in the council, the assailants descended on the village on Wednesday, originating from the Kuyeri Forest in Kaduna State.

Detailing the harrowing events, Zakari revealed that the attackers operated in a methodical manner, splitting into groups to carry out their nefarious deeds. The District Head, Alhaji Abdurrahman Danjuma Ali, and his family suffered greatly, with his wife and son, Lukman, becoming captives of the assailants. Lukman’s recent marriage further compounded the anguish of the family.

Equally targeted was Alhaji Alhassan Sidi Kawu, the Marafa of Kawu and a former PDP Chairman of Kawu Ward, along with his four children. The gunmen spared no one, extending their reach to Sarkin Pawan Kawu, Gambo Pawa, abducting him, his two wives, and several children from his compound.

Despite the gravity of the situation, attempts to reach out to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, for official comments, were unsuccessful as she remained unresponsive to calls and texts from journalists.

The chilling assault serves as a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges facing communities in Nigeria, particularly those in border regions susceptible to incursions from criminal elements.

As families anxiously await news of their loved ones, authorities are under mounting pressure to swiftly address the abduction and bring the perpetrators to justice.
