Group drags Perm Sec to ICPC over certificate forgery, age falsification

NEWS DIGEST – The Coalition of Civil Society for Justice on Friday filed a petition against the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel, Mr. Edet Sunday Akpan, over alleged forgery of his academics credentials and falsification of vital civil service information.

The group filled the petition to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, accusing Mr. Akpan of forging his school leaving certificate and date of birth.

The petition was signed by one Mr. Ibrahim Kabiru Dallah, who said the Permanent Secretary had lied about his age, as his school leaving certificate is also missing from available record.

“The said Mr. Akpan joined the civil service in Akwa-Ibom where records show that his original date of birth is 1958. He transferred his service to Federal Government in 1999 with the same record of Date of Birth. However, in his IPPIS, he entered his date of birth as 1962. This is a deliberate criminal falsification to help him overstay service,” part of the petition reads.

NewsDigest also gathered that the Permanent Secretary is also been accused of parading a questionable primary and secondary school certificates.

Akpan is said to have started his education at Qua Iboe Science Secondary School (Etinan Institute) in 1965.

However, facts revealed that he was born in 1958, and it was practically impossible that he started primary education in 1965 as against his alleged false 1962 date of birth.

“His primary and secondary certificates are said to be missing from his records. This appears to be for an obvious reason of their non-existence or to hide a falsification date of birth,” the group said.

It then urged the anti-graft commission to swiftly investigate the matter, saying it is a case of public interest.
