Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has granted amnesty to 96 inmates across the state’s correctional centers, exercising his executive powers to offer pardons to convicted individuals.

The gesture included a donation of N13 million for transportation fare and palliatives, facilitating their transition into small businesses. Additionally, N7 million was allocated to clearing numerous fines imposed by the courts.

The decision stems from a recommendation by the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, affirming the convicts’ reformation. Selection criteria prioritised minor offences and financial incapacity to settle fines. Notably, individuals convicted of grave crimes were excluded to deter future transgressions.

Each pardoned inmate is entitled to N100,000 to kickstart entrepreneurial ventures, fostering self-sufficiency and societal integration. The initiative aims to empower beneficiaries towards constructive citizenship.

Chairman of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, Hassan U. EI-Yakub (SAN), disclosed the reception of 106 applications, reflecting the convicts’ plea for gubernatorial leniency and clemency.
