The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Zone 11 Command, encompassing Osun, Ondo, and Oyo States, reported on Tuesday that nine fatalities occurred in 13 road accidents during the first three days of the Sallah holiday.

The Command also stated that 78 individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crashes involving 21 vehicles and 128 people. 

These injured individuals were promptly transported to hospitals across the zone, while 41 others were rescued without injuries.

Reviewing the first three days of the Command’s special Sallah operation, which began on Friday and covered major routes within its jurisdiction, Acting Zonal Commanding Officer Leye Adegboyega revealed that a total of 3,018 personnel, 57 patrol vehicles, five ambulances, and two heavy-duty tow trucks were deployed during the period.

Adegboyega emphasized that personnel covered about 65 major routes daily to ensure visibility and reduce speed-related accidents.

 Standby rescue teams were also stationed across the zone for quick response to accident scenes.

The statement read in part: “The 2024 Eid El Kabir Sallah Special Patrol Operation, scheduled from Friday, June 14th to Friday, June 21st, 2024, aims to ensure free traffic flow, minimize road traffic crashes (RTCs), provide prompt rescue services, and clear obstructions on all major roads and critical corridors across the three states during and after the Sallah festivities.”

“To achieve the mission, 3,018 personnel (comprising 2,155 Regular Marshals and 863 Special Marshals), 57 patrol vehicles, five ambulances, and two heavy-duty tow trucks have been deployed. Key routes include the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway, Ibadan-Ife Expressway, Ife-Ilesa Expressway, Ilesa-Ipetujesa-Akure Expressway, Sagamu-Ore-Benin Expressway, and Ibadan-Oyo-Ogbomoso Expressway.”

“In the first three days of the operation, we achieved the following: the arrest of 737 traffic offenders for 766 various traffic offenses that could have led to RTCs; 219 public enlightenment activities across the news media, motor parks, churches, mosques, and other public places to promote road safety awareness; and prompt rescue services for victims of 13 RTCs involving 21 vehicles and 128 people, resulting in nine fatalities and 78 injuries.”

Adegboyega appealed to the general public and all road users to use the roads responsibly and help reduce the loss of lives and valuable properties.
